U.S. to Diversify Iraq Exit Points (Then Bomb Iran?)
8/21/2007 10:27:03 AM
This AP story talks about a possible troop reduction sometime in 2008. To that end, the United States has initiated talks with Jordan and Turkey with the hopes of using these countries as withdrawal points for soldiers and equipment.
But there may be a more important and subtle meaning to seeking alternate exit points. It is certainly no secret how vulnerable Route Tampa has become. The 300+ mile supply line running from Kuwait to Baghdad has emerged more and more dangerous with attacks occurring more frequently. Recall, for example, this leaked memo announcing a delay in food deliveries. Additionally, Britain is beginning to draw dawn all forces in the south, moving its 5500 troops to Basrah airport. By November they will have completed this "redeployment" and handed over control to the Iraqi army and police. And if Gordon Brown's intimations can be believed, a complete British withdrawal may result soon thereafter. This leaves Route Tampa completely unprotected in southern Iraq. And that gets to the heart of seeking additional access points in Jordan and Turkey.
Thus, the quandary. Of particular concern should be Iran's ability to interdict US supplies in southern Iraq. No doubt Iran currently views this as a deterrent against possible US or Israeli attack. Viewed as such, the recent propositions to Jordan and Turkey may be a preparatory step for such an attack to occur.
Ron Paul Meets "Where's George?”

I caught this on a meetup group of which I'm a member. Pretty good idea:
Too bad my handwriting sucks. Ron Paul stamps, anyone?
David Vitter Holds Press Conference

And talks about a new water resources bill? Huh? Courtesy of TPM:
Vitter is on record denying rumors he was seeing a prostitute in 2002. So why should we believe this guy when he denies the accusations he also patronized well known New Orleans prostitute Wendy Cortez? And has the Giuliani campaign dumped this champion of family values yet?
Surge Success in al-Anbar

Great post over at Lew Rockwell's blog about why the touted success of the surge in al-Anbar is wrong. In cased you missed it, here is the exchange between Sen. Jim Webb (D-VI) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).
The Politico's Smearing of Ron Paul

I just caught this blog entry over at Antiwar.com. Having listened to that interview, Raimondo is correct in asserting that Ron Paul was speaking to Iran when he described using a Gulf of Tonkin style incident to incite war. All this talk about Paul being a so-called 9/11 "truther" or conspiracy nut is entirely baseless. Is Alex Jones a bit bat shit insane? Yes, he's completely nuts in my view. But no one should be guilty by association (as argued by the folks over at The Liberty Papers, for example.) Paul, by giving an interview, is not endorsing any of these views.
And why is it so taboo to suggest the government might lie or manipulate facts in order to start a war? After all, the Gulf of Tonkin incident is real and the cost was tremendous — as real as the blood and money being spilled in the current debacle. In terms of staging attacks on American soil, there is certainly at least some precedent for the idea. Check out Operation Northwoods.
